Xavi: There’s No Room For Ronaldo At Treble Hunting Barcelona

Labels:

After adding the FIFA Confederations Cup bronze medal with Spain to his European Championship, Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League honours list, Xavi is now ready to head off to a well-earned holiday.

But before leaving football behind for the next few weeks or so, the Barcelona midfield mastermind looked forward to next season and warned his rivals that the Blaugrana will be aiming for another treble at the very least.

“We are in a very privileged situation. We know that Barca are in good football health and next season we will be presented with an exciting challenge,” he said in an interview with Sport.

“We have won more titles than we expected and because we have done so well, we have been rewarded with three more competitions and that makes us very excited.

“We have a lot of desire to continue winning. This group has a strong mentality and why shouldn’t we dream about winning the treble again? I already said it last year and we managed to obtain it.

“It is no longer a dream, although we are aware that it will be difficult [to win it again]. In the history of Spanish football, it has only been done once, but it is also necessary to keep thinking that we will get six next time.”

One of the three extra trophies Barcelona will be contesting for, aside from the Spanish and UEFA Supercups, is the Club World Cup. And having flopped once in 2006 in Japan, Xavi assured that he and his team-mates are eager to make amends.

“We are very excited about that competition. After playing and losing in the final once, I am very motivated to try and win it,” he stressed.

“We will not make the same mistakes again. The majority of this squad have already experienced it once, and we will make sure we work hard for it, make sacrifices and maintain our humility.

“In the world of sport, if you do not strive, you will be surpassed.”

Finally, the 29-year-old playmaker spoke about his arch nemeses, Real Madrid, and the rebirth of the Galacticos empire, their quest to sign the best players in the world and the recent confirmation that Cristiano Ronaldo is now a Merengue.

“The best player in the world is Lionel Messi and there’s no chance he will switch allegiance,” he declared.

“We also have Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o and with that kind of luxury, we are capable of doing anything.

“As for Ronaldo, I wouldn’t want him here. At Barca, we do not have room for players who fill gossip magazines. We are hard workers and sportsmen but he, on the other hand, is uncontrollable.”
